The definitive guide to Leeds Freshers Week and Clubbing in Leeds

It can all be a bit overwhelming – moving to a new city, not knowing whether to buy that freshers wristband that is permanently 90% “sold out,” and wondering which club will guarantee you a good night out. Here’s a run-down of the main clubs in Leeds, followed by a fairly definitive list of the freshers events hitting Leeds in Sept/Oct 2016..

Hifi: Mixtape Tuesdays, MoveOnUp Wednesdays, FunkSoulNation Fridays, Sam’s Soul Shack and Sunday Joint bring the northern soul, motown, sixties, hip-hop, disco and boogie vibes to this underground hangout, with specialist nights also playing everything from hip hop to sub dub.  2 Central Road, Leeds, LS1 6DE

Wire: Underground club with full Funktion One Sound system, cheap drinks and good vibes. Home to legendary nights such as Fuzzy Logic (indie, alternative, and everything from Bowie to Kendrick), one-off DJ’s, dub, and r’n’b. 2-8 Calls Lane, Leeds, LS1 6DN

Canal Mills: Huge, vaguely druggy warehouse-type setting playing host to nights like Regression Sessions, Detonate and the ever-popular Bongo Bingo. Generally house and drum’n’bass music, and a big smoking area. A little out of the way location-wise. Brandon Street, Leeds LS12 2EB

Tiger Tiger: Avoid unless you like going out in bodycon, having leery middle aged men drooling all over you, and being subjected to boys in topknots trying to grind on you to the tune of Biebs’ ‘Sorry.’ 117 Albion St, Leeds LS2 8DY.

Pryzm: See Tiger Tiger. 16-18 Woodhouse Ln, Leeds LS2 8LX.

West Indian Centre: Although it looks vaguely like you’re at a school disco and is a bit out of the way, it plays host to some decent subdub, bass and dancehall music. 10 Laycock Place, Leeds, LS7 3JA.

The Key Club: All the pop punk kids of Leeds congregate here to dance their emo woes away to Paramore. Expect lots of band tees and green hair. 66 Merrion Street, Leeds, LS2 8LW

Mission: Your standard student club with weekly club nights playing mostly house music. Three main rooms, an underground feel and heaving with students. 8 Heaton’s Ct, Leeds LS1 4LJ

The Faversham: A stone’s throw from the University of Leeds campus, this multi-purpose venue is a bar and kitchen by day and a trashy student club by night. Its ‘weekly mash up party’ Donuts is a student favourite and is always heaving with drunk societies. 1-5 Springfield Mount, Leeds, LS2 9NG

Beaverworks: Huge converted Victorian warehouse in the middle of nowhere which throws notorious parties and hosts events like High Rise and Flux. Huge smoking area and a bonfire. You probably need to be on drugs to be here. 36 Whitehouse Street LS10 1AD

Old Red Bus Station: Brand new, so not much to say here, but this historic stop is being transformed into a multi-purpose venue. 104 Vicar Lane, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS2 7NL

LUU: Leeds University Union’s clubs Stylus and Pulse play host to the wonderfully trashy Fruity Fridays and various other events throughout the year like headphone discos and fancy dress nights. 2 Lifton Pl, Leeds LS2 9JS

Warehouse: Open since the 70’s, Warehouse is a student favourite, especially ‘Sticky Feet,’ which plays bass, hip-hop and r’n’b. 19-21 Somers Street, Leeds LS1 2RG

Space: Recently voted the second worst club in the UK. Sticky toilets, terrible music, way too many weird locals. Awful bouncers. Pryzm-esque vibe, but even worse. Just don’t do it. 11 Hirst’s Yard, Leeds, LS1 6NJ

O2 Academy: Decent venue in a good location. Home to the popular (god knows why) PROJEKT where you’re guaranteed to get touched up by a lad from Leeds Beckett who wears huaraches. 55 Cookridge Street, Leeds, LS1 3AW

Mint Club: Poor location but a spacious venue frequented by house music lovers. Mint often hosts well-known DJ’s and mash-up nights. Aquatite House, Water Ln, Leeds LS11 9UD
